Atalbeitar, situated in the wonderful Alpujarra valley, is on the South slopes of the Sierra Nevada National Park.
This village feels like stepping into the past as it has changed little since the time when the Moors lived there. It is one of the very few well preserved villages remaining, a hidden treasure with a magical atmosphere.
It has narrow beautiful streets and a charming square with a water fountain that comes from a natural spring. (The house is also spring fed, with added chlorine).
Worth mentioning is that Atalbeitar is car free (cars are left at the entrance to the village, but you can arrive to within 15m of the house for unloading). This place is great for exploring on foot and for children’s games.
It is wonderful to sit in the square by the fountain and under the tree, with a cold beer , local wine or on Sundays fresh orange juice! and listen to the chatter of the villagers and the water of the fountain…

When walking around it you will see ancient water channels, “acequias,” that add to the historical feel, originally introduced by the Moors, and still in use.
There’s a beautiful walk from the house that takes you above the typical roofs of Atalbeitar. The house is at the front with the uninterrupted views of the valley.

Atalbeitar sits at the heart of a network of magical Moorish paths. These paths crisscross the landscape, linking it to the other villages of the valley and beyond.
And whilst Atalbéitar is a peaceful retreat without shops or restaurants, the nearby villages like Pitres , Mecina or Portugos are a short walk away ( minutes by car), and these provide all amenities and local cuisine.
There are in Atalbeitar several traditions and fiestas celebrated every year, please see Fiestas for more details.
Also the locals are very creative and interesting, please make sure you meet them!
Finally, there are in the house as well as other suggestions for where to eat or what to do, a collection of maps with exciting detailed walks via the moorish paths.
