Activities In Las Alpujarras
Embark on Adventures: Exploring the Alpujarras through Walking, Trekking, Horse Riding, and More!
Mountaineering

We are on the slopes of Mulhacen (3450m), the highest peak in Spain, and with a bit of help from a car to drive until the road ends…and an early start, it can be reached in a day trip.
Please see maps in the house for this and many other options.
For thrilling adventures, all in our beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range where on clear days it is possible to view the coasts of North Africa some 200km away across the Mediterranean Sea… we offer you some of our ideas.
Trekking:
The area is fantastic for walking and there are countless exquisite Moorish paths.
It is generally safe to explore independently, but if you wish to take a guide, we recommend George, he lives nearby and his number is 0034 645440983.
He can arrange half day or whole day walks, and will tailor them to the capacity of the group, picking up from and returning to the house. This is a great way to learn a bit more about the area and its history, flora and fauna. He also has a gentle horse, Princess, who he can bring on the walk to carry food or less able members, which adds a wonderful timeless atmosphere to the walk.

Recommend Places To Eat And Things To Do:
In the house, we have a book for our guests where we write tips that will help you have a wonderful time.
But here some recommendations:
The highly recommended vegetarian restaurant called L’Atelier.
The legendary ‘Mora Luna‘, a good bar/restaurant which is famous for it’s pizzas and evenings of live music:
Barranquillo:
A nice bar/restaurant owned and run by local Marissa and her family, good traditional Alpujarran cooking.
Also, the entire province of Granada offers free Tapas with each drink you buy. Usually, you get the specialties of each bar and this is a wonderful way to sample the local cuisine.
Try googleling the ‘Alpujarra’ for a plethora of images and information on this fascinating region.
PLACES TO EXPLORE:
GRANADA is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away, a great day visit with its fascinating historic center, the Alhambra palace, the arab baths ‘hammams’ (vapor baths and hot pools) see Aljibe de San Miguel baths, and the wonderful Hamman Al Andalus , the old Moorish quarter Albaizin, the flamenco caves of Sacromonte , finish the visit before returning home with an aromatic tea in one of the exotic tea houses.
THE COAST:
Salobrena is 1 hour drive away is an old Moorish coastal town with sandy beaches, good fish restaurants, and an impressive cliff-top castle. A short distance from there and you can find all manner of hidden coves, beaches, and villages to explore.
Almunecar is 1 1/2 hours away, this is another historic beach town that offers it all, including a magnificent flea market every Sunday, and gypsy market “El Baratillo” on Fridays both having everything and anything.
The Escuelita
The Escuelita, which is Atalbeitar’s Village Hall, has a program of regular activities, usually offering yoga, dance and sometimes meditation and art exhibitions. Look at the notice board or ask neighbours to find out what activities are going on during your visit.
There is also a table tennis table that can be made accessibile with some advance warning.
SWIMMING
Wild swimming:
There are beautiful pools in the River Trevelez, below the house by Fondales (there’s a map of how to find these in the house’s information folder we provide you with).
For wild plunging, we recommend the ‘Junta de los Rios’ above Portugos (on all local walking maps), has some natural pools for dipping in after a good walk. (Access by car also possible via the carretera forestal from Portugos).
If you wish to do swimming outings:
- The Campsite ‘Balcon de Pitres’ (on the main road 3 mins on the other side of Pitres from Atalbeitar). It has a good restaurant often with live music on the weekends, and a good sized outdoor pool with great views over the valley, it can be a good family day out.
- The Hotel in Mecina,( a 30 min walking outing from Atalbeitar via the Moorish path, or drive there in 5 min.), offers a good outdoor pool and lovely gardens.
