Activities In Las Alpujarras

WALKING, TREKKING, HIKING:

There’s a huge network of good walking paths crisscrossing this area of rich wildlife, we have maps detailing the exciting moorish paths, and we can point you in the right direction for unforgettable walks with incredible views, rock pools to bathe…and plenty more.
The Sierra Nevada National Park is just behind us, offering a huge quantity of activities and pleasures.

The Puente Palo loop– lovely and shady, not hard but glorious.

Camino Real’ or GR7, a famous path which amazingly passes through our village Atalbeitar, en route from Tarifa all the way to Greece!!! It takes in the breathtakingly beautiful views and villages of the area. Our section goes through the heart of the Alpujarras, through the orchards, terraces, and open countryside between the picturesque white villages. We have the complete GR-7 map with all the walks and detailed information.

To the 7 lagunes– from the nearby village of Trevelez, an stunning walk to the higher Sierra

The GR-142– Along the River Trevelez valley-to connect with it from the house it is 15 minutes walk.

MOUNTANEERING:

We are on the slopes of Mulhacen (3450m), the highest peak in Spain, and with a bit of help from a car and an early start in can be reached in a day trip. If you would like a guide: See Nevadensis with professional guides who offer walks/climbs of varying levels of difficulty, and can teach you about local flora and fauna at the same time.

HORSE RIDING

with “Rutas a Caballo” (tel: 0034-618248463) based in the neighbouring village of Ferreirola . They will give you a fantastic experience of the mountains on horseback!
Also day rides in gorgeous surroundings are offered by Sierra Trails.

PAINTING and PHOTOGRAPHY

SKIING:

The Sierra Nevada ski resort is a 1 hr 45 mins drive away, where 35km of slopes and very reasonable prices make for an exciting and affordable day out. The season runs from December through to the end of April.

DANCE:

10 minutes up the mountain above Pitres is a beautiful center called Baile en el Aire. which runs dance courses all summer, as well as yoga, shiatsu, theater, voice, and plenty more. Click on the link above to have a look and see if there are any that interest you.

SPIRITUAL EXPLORING

the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Ose Ling is approximately 30 minutes away by car offering courses and meditations.

MUSIC:

PLACES TO EXPLORE:

GRANADA is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away, a great day visit with its fascinating historic center, the Alhambra palace, the arab baths ‘hammams’ (vapor baths and hot pools) see Aljibe de San Miguel baths, and the wonderful Hamman Al Andalus , the old Moorish quarter Albaizin, the flamenco caves of Sacromonte , finish the visit before returning home with an aromatic tea in one of the exotic tea houses.

Also, the entire province of Granada offers free Tapas with each drink you buy, including Atalbeitar. Usually, you get the specialties of each bar and this is a wonderful way to sample the local cuisine.

THE COAST:

Salobrena is 1 hour drive away is an old Moorish coastal town with sandy beaches, good fish restaurants, and an impressive cliff-top castle. A short distance from there and you can find all manner of hidden coves, beaches, and villages to explore.

Almunecar is 1 1/2 hours away, this is another historic beach town that offers it all, including a magnificent flea market every Sunday, and gypsy market “El Baratillo” on Fridays both having everything and anything.
